2003–04 Utah State Aggies Men’s Basketball
Season Overview
The 2003–04 season was one of the most dominant regular seasons in Utah State history. Under head coach Stew Morrill, the Aggies finished 25–4 overall and an extraordinary 17–1 in Big West Conference play. Utah State controlled games with deliberate, highly efficient offense and disciplined half‑court defense, turning the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum into one of the toughest environments in the league. Despite their remarkable record and time spent in the national rankings, the season became equally known for the disappointment of the postseason.
Big West Conference & Tournament
Utah State’s 17–1 conference mark earned the Aggies the Big West regular‑season championship and positioned them as the favorite entering the Big West Tournament. However, in a major upset in the tournament semifinals, Utah State was stunned by Cal State Northridge, 63–62. The narrow loss on a neutral floor not only ended the Aggies’ bid for a conference tournament title but also put their NCAA Tournament hopes in the hands of the selection committee.
Postseason (NIT)
Despite a 25–4 record and national attention, Utah State was left out of the 2004 NCAA Tournament, a snub that drew widespread criticism from media and fans who considered the Aggies one of the best teams not to receive an at‑large bid. Instead, Utah State accepted an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The Aggies traveled to face Hawai‘i in the first round and fell 85–74, bringing an otherwise stellar year to an abrupt close.
