The 2004–05 Utah State Aggies finished 24–8 overall and 13–5 in Big West play, placing second in the regular-season standings. Led by head coach Stew Morrill, the Aggies caught fire in March, rolling through the Big West Tournament and defeating top-seeded Pacific 65–52 in the championship game to claim the league’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid. Utah State earned a No. 14 seed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament and faced No. 3 seed Arizona in the first round, where the Aggies’ season ended with a 66–53 loss. It was another 20-win campaign and postseason appearance that solidified Utah State as one of the most consistent mid-major programs in the country.
